Case studies of building projects with ground screws
Normally, decks or boardwalks do not need a building consent if you cant fall more than 1.5 metres from it. However a safety barrier is required if there is a fall of 1 metre or more. It is recommended to confirm with your local council to ensure your proposed deck does not have any district planning implications such as site coverage etc.
As a first step we recommend you measure and mark the location of the decking in your garden. This will enable you to more easily visualise the decking, how it will be used, and the impact it has on the surroundings. It is also useful to think about the type of furniture and other items you want to place upon the deck so that it is not too small, or difficult to manoeuvre around.
If you are building over a lawn it is a good idea to cover this with a landscaping fabric followed by gravel to prevent the grass and weeds from poking up through the slats of the deck! The deck joists need to be anchored into the ground, usually at 2 metre intervals in all directions. This is ideally suited to the versatile ground screw rather than the older, heavier concrete piers or posts. Stop Digging’s installer will arrive at your home with all of the necessary equipment and will sink the beam screws according to your plan. Then, without delay, it’s time to start building!
We recommend using the span tables from NZ 3604 to determine the size and length of the bearers and joists used for construction of your deck. You will need to ensure you use H3.2 treated framing timber. We install the groundscrews to a laser level datum along the bearer lines, leaving you with the simple task of lifting the bearers into position and attaching to the groundscrews with coach screws or bolts! When the bearers and joists are in position, the fun begins with the fixing of the deck boards!
Building outdoor spaces
When you are planning to build a pergola or covered garden space planning permission may not be needed, but there are several restrictions so it is best if you speak with your planning officer about your design.
Pergolas, patio covers and other similar structures often can be purchased as kits or just bought as parts at your local DIY store. In either case, the design and construction is the same, using posts and beams resting on a sound foundation. The ground screw from Stop Digging is the perfect solution for installing an outdoor building such as this. As there is enormous variety in the design and manufacture of these structures, the versatility and precision placement of the ground screw is the best choice for such a foundation. Depending on the positioning and frame construction we recommend our post, adapter or beam screw. Often a combination of these over variable terrain gives the best results. Contact your local installer for a consultation and a quote. We have extensive experience in underpinning garden buildings across the length and breadth of Australia.
A building consent is not usually required for fences or hoardings up to 2.5m high, although there are separate requirements for restricting access to residential pools.
Fences have to take a lot of punishment from wind, rain, moulds, plants and children of course! We offer a range of post ground screws of different sizes and heads for attaching a wide variety of posts shapes. The size of the ground screw depends mainly on the height of the fence, for example a 935mm post screw easily supporting a 1.2m high fence with a post gap of approx 2m. We recommend you select pressure-treated wood, stainless steel screws and other fittings for longevity. When it comes to the fence’s design, google can help, but it is also a good idea to talk with your neighbours to find a mutually satisfactory design.
Measure out where you should have your fence and mark the ground at 1.8 meter intervals, for example. Call Stop Digging and our installer will come out and anchor all the post screws you need, after you inform them of any underground services or other issues. Once installed, you are good to go!
Building sheds and other garden buildings
As there is enormous variety in garden buildings, from kits through to self-made designs, ground screws are a versatile and flexible solution for any foundation needs. For example, a simple shed can be built on a deck-like foundation or frame and the number of supports will vary depending on the size of the structure. Stop Digging’s beam screws are ideal for this, and can be quickly and easily installed and adjusted for a level frame. Or, if the shed is a kit, then our adapter screw may be a better fit. Other storage buildings, such as bicycle sheds, bin rooms or children’s playhouses benefit enormously from the flexibility of ground screws and their precision adjustment for height and location. Contact your local installer for tips and quotes!
Building a carport
A Carport is a good alternative to a garage as it often more cost effective! Carports often do not need a building consent if they are less than 20 square metres of ground floor area. To be regarded as a carport, at least one side of the structure must remain open to the outdoors at all times. As there are certain exemptions, it is always worth checking with your local council to confirm your design is acceptable.
We recommend that you design the carport in a similar style to the surroundings so that the extension does not detract from your home. Don’t forget to install an electric socket in the carport for charging, cleaning and other tasks. Do not skimp on the dimensions so that parking is stress-free!
Building Houses and Cabins

We give you a secure anchorage
Our installers anchor the ground screws for you. Installation is quick and easy, for example the supports for a medium-sized wooden deck can be ready in just a few hours. The ground is pre-drilled for each screw to ensure the best possible bite, regardless of the type of soil or rock. Our equipment is light and portable and does not wreck your garden moving into place. The drilling does not tear up the grass, tarmac or other terrain, and after we are finished we leave behind the minimum of mess. Stop Digging’s ground screws is designed to exceed requirements of the Building Code for Durability.
in every way.
Ground screws replace and outperform concrete blocks. If we consider the environmental cost of concrete, ground screws offer a way forward in these changing times without sacrificing stability, cost or longevity.
Fast to install, strong, lightweight, low cost, robust, low mess, climate friendly – what is not to love! There are many advantages to the ground screw, but above all else it is about your time and effort: you do not have to lug heavy loads, dig deep holes, pour messy concrete and wait for it to set. Our helical ground screws should not be confused with basic ground anchors or lightweight soil screws from DIY stores that you can install yourself – We only offer a complete, installed foundation that meets all requirements of the building code.
